Evidence-Based & Promising Practices
Evidence Based Practices (EBPs) and Promising Practices (PPs) are clinical and administrative services/practices for adults with mental illness, children with serious emotional disturbance, and individuals with a developmental disability, that have consistently produced specific intended positive outcomes in multiple research studies that are based on the highest standard of research.
Prior to becoming an evidence based practice or promising practice, the specific clinical practice or program most likely moved through the hierarchical “practice rungs,” which are based on the number of research studies and the standard of research used to conduct the studies such as randomized control trial versus anecdotal reports and clinical opinion.
EBPs and Promising Practices require fidelity to the researched model and continued outcome measurements to ensure that the practice is being delivered as prescribed in order to produce the intended outcomes. Although each practice may have specific goals outside of the following, the general outcomes of EBPs and Promising Practices focus on the core outcomes that drive recovery:
- To live independently in a place called home;
- To gain an education, whether for career enhancement or personal growth;
- To have a job that enhances income, provides a means to make a contribution, and enables the individual to receive recognition;
- To have meaningful relationships; and
- To avoid the spirit breaking experiences of hospitalization, incarceration or substance abuse.
